OMG, so I am officially in love with 1050 ESPN Radio!! 1050 is better than ANY OTHER radio station, AM or FM! It's been a few months and I'm obsessed! I never really thought myself an "AM" girl but AYYO!! I've had issues with FM radio for years. I am grossed out by hearing the same 10 songs ALL THE DAMN TIME!! That's why I loved my iPod. Put the bitch on shuffle and keep it moving!! All kinds of music from reggae to country; Bob Marley to The Wallflowers, Carl Thomas to Slick Rick, from Al B. Sure! to Madonna, Spice Girls to Sizzla, KFed to Don Omar, THE Notorious B.I.G., Incubus to Grand Puba, 3rd Eye Blind to The Pharcyde, A-Ha to Vybz Kartel, Macka Diamond to Young Jeezy, Yannick Noah to Regina Spektor, Poor Righteous Teacher to The Backstreet Boys, Mystikal to My Chemical Romance. You name it, I got it. And you would think radio stations would want us to listen to more and address our needs but meh... It never really occurred to me to try AM cuz all I really knew about it was bad reception and 1010 Wins. Mike & Mike, Max Kellerman, Stephen A. Smith, Dan Patrick, Michael Kay, Brandon Tierney!! Pick your beautiful poison!! It's a 24 hour affair!! I have abandoned my iPod and rekindled my love for the walkman! (well, that's at least until I get some more cash to by that radio converter...donations? anyone?) I've also ditched subway, and I have taken up "bussing." Who cares if it takes me 4 hours to get to Queens!?! At least I get to listen to 1050 ESPN Radio!! The TV is off, the radio is ON!! The only FM I fux with is The Wendy Williams Experience on 107.5 WBLS. One of the best things I've done with my life thus far was intern with her for a year! Wendy is the shit, and if she talked more sports we would be on the same page.

Protect Yo Gotdamn Neck!
"Without struggle, there is no purpose."
I love RB Priest Holmes and word on the street is he's comin back to football. As far as I'm concerned Larry Johnson can keep on keepin on with his holdout and Mr. Holmes can bring it back!! I've always admired him as a player, and I would love to see the "Bishop" back on the field setting records like he did years ago. In 2004 he dislocated his hip and many considered that to be a career ender but he came back better than ever. If he can recover from his most recent injury and still be productive I'm with it. He played 7 games in 2005 before a head-to-head collision with LB Shawne Merriman of the San Diego Chargers caused him severe head and neck trauma.
But let me admit that I'm scared. My homie Priest hasn't played in damn near 2 years, 22 months to be exact. Anytime someone is seriously injured, especially a head and neck injury, I don't really see too many reasons to keep trying to play. Hang it up and enjoy the rest of your life. You know, the other part that doesn't involve you takin hits for a living? I don't know, there's just something about not being paralyzed for life that appeals to me...Hmmm... But then again, I said the same thing about Chad Pennington before the start of last season. I didn't see why he would keep putting the Jets through shoulder surgery after shoulder surgery. Take a seat and let someone else take a shot at it. What's the point of having 3 backup QBs if they never even hit the field. I was soooo wrizzong!! CP is back better than ever and I'm eatin it up!

Priest is a 3 time Pro-Bowler. In 2003 he set the single season touchdown record. Yeah that's right. 27 TDs on 1,420 yeards. And this was after 2 knee injuries and the hip surgery. He's played in 109 games, rushed for a sick 8,035 yards on 1,735 carries, and 86 touchdowns. His receiving numbers are just as impressive; 334 receptions for 2,945 yards and 8 more TDs. Want an even better sign Priest should come back? As much as I liked him, Dick Vermeil is gone, and one of my favorite coaches, Herman Edwards is in. Hey, I'm from New York. The Pledge of Allegiance.
[Said through clenched teeth] Same thing can't be said for the Giants. I've always seen Eli Manning as my little baby and I've given him the benefit of the doubt and blamed the majority of his issues on his age and experience. What's the point of a QB who folds under pressure? True Giants PROgress, not REgress. If Eli Manning can't get it together this season I want to see Jared Lorenzen on the field. The Pillsbury THROWboy!! I love it!!
I read an article by a a guy, Jason Whitlock, and it pissed me OFF!! He's a writer for the Kansas City Star and his "thoughts" on Priest are complete and utter garbage. Click here and read it. Tell me what you think. I'm sick of people who put sports before a man's health. Whitcock, you can shove it.

ARod Has 499 Homers!! Or Is It 500?
Jul 24, 2007 - Shout out to Alex Rodriguez!! The New York Yankees third baseman isn’t only making history with the leagues highest salary, but he’s also en route to becoming the youngest player in MLB history to hit 500 home runs. He hit his 499th last night in Kansas City against the Royals. No. 499 came in the 8th inning Wednesday night, and the Yanks went on to win the game 7-1. The Yanks have won 6 in a row and are looking to sweep the series tonight in KC.
No. 500 wouldn’t be the only record ARod has set. On June 8, 2005, he became the youngest player to slam 400 HRs before the age of 30. The question now is how long will it take for him to break the All-Time Home Run record. We all know Barry Bonds is only a smack or two away from Hank Aaron’s 755, but the whole steroids situation kinda discredits his accomplishments. Many think ARod is next in line and if he does eclipse Aaron, the entire country will be behind him. And the salary I mentioned earlier? Yeah, let’s try $27,708,525 for 2007. This is only a small portion of the biggest deal in MLB history, $252 million over 10 years. KACHING!!
By the by – The Yankees played the Baltimore Orioles on June 28th but the game was suspended because of the weather. At that point, ARod had 493 home runs. The game will resume this Friday in Baltimore and if Rodriguez homers in this game, they will credit the HR retroactively, making his 499th home run from last night actually his 500th. Crazy, huh?
Want another great fact? We share the same birthday!! Tomorrow, July 27th, the best day of the year, ARod turns 32, and I, my friends, will turn 22!! Oh, the pages are turning!

Let's Make It Official
On Tuesday, July 24, 2007, The New York Post reported that New York Jets running back, 34 year old Curtis Martin, will finally reveal the news that pretty much everyone has already known. Martin will officially announce his retirement from the National Football League on Thursday, a day before the start of Jets training camp.
Martin spent his first three seasons with the New England Patriots, then signed with the Jets as a free agent before the start of the 1998 season. Martin missed the entire 2006 season and hasn’t played a lick in the past 19 months. He initially tore cartilage in his right knee against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2 of the 2005 season. Martin continued to play and the injury flared up two weeks later against the Baltimore Ravens. He then re-injured the same knee Week 12 against the Patriots. He ended that game, and his season, with 29 yards on 15 carries. The seriousness of his injury stems from the fact that he was so badly injured that the cartilage was surgically removed and his knee was literally bone-on-bone. (OUCH!!) Martin had rushed for over 1,000 yards in his previous 10 seasons, but finished 2005-2006 with 735 yards. After that he was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list, and pretty much stayed there the rest of his career.
In November of 2006, while attempting to rehab his ravaged knee, Martin had this to say at a news conference, “I think this is as good as my knee gets, where it is right now.” Though he realized the severity of his devastating knee injury, but it took him some time to accept the ramifications of it until recently. “It doesn’t look like it’s too bright as far as me having a further career.” Martin signed an eight year contract extension in August of 2002. He has since re-worked his contract and voided to final two years, the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Martin has also taken deep pay cuts 2 years in a row; from $2.5 million to $810,000 in 2006 and from $3.25 million to $820,000 in 2007. All of these moves allow the Jets more than $2 million in salary cap space. Through all of this the Jets have been very gracious, appreciative and supportive of him in his wish to come back. They much admired his talent, recognized the value of his sacrifice, and knew that since they had ridden his ass so hard the previous seasons they might as well give him the courtesy of payin his ass a little extra.
Now before I get into everything I really want to say, let me state, for the record, that Curtis Martin is one of the most efficient running backs in NFL history. He spent 13 years in the league and was a playmaker, a great teammate, and one of the finest running backs of all time. Martin is atop the list for Jets all-time leading rushers with 10,302 yards. He ranks fourth in NFL history, amassing 14,101 yards, behind guys like Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton and Barry Sanders. Sanders is the only other man in NFL history to have 10 consecutive 1,000 yard seasons. In 2004, Martin won the NFL rushing title with an astounding 1,697 yards. I mean, we’re talkin elite here. Curtis Martin is IN the Pro Football Hall of Fame. So please, don’t take anything said below to mean I don’t appreciate him and understand how special he was to the teams he played for, the National Football League, and his fans.
NOW - Someone please show me the clause in his contract that states that an NFL player must run himself ragged and, literally, into the ground. Exactly! There’s no law that says you have to play football until you’re washed up and worn down! There’s a simple philosophy that means more and more to me as I get older. The idea behind it is that you work hard, but you never give anyone or anything your all, your everything. There has to be something left for you; save room for yourself. And that’s not to say get on the field and half-ass it. Or be an absentee parent. Or a part-time lover, for that matter. Whatever it is you’re doing, let that be your main focus. You benefit the most when you give it 100%. Make every day count so you know that when it’s all said and done you have no regrets, and you have your health. But always remember, that if or when that thing or person you’re doing runs out, you’ll be okay. In a violent and physically taxing sport such as football, isn’t that the main goal? Whether you’re raising your kids or lovin somebody down, keep your damn eyes on the prize! Don’t be so blinded by your ambition and determination that by the time you take those blinders off, your head, shoulders, knees and toes are all beaten up and useless. Don’t run yourself ragged chasing after those kids. You know why? Cuz by the time they’re off to college and married you’re exhausted, overweight and underappreciated. And not to mention divorced cuz you spent more time on those rug rats than your own damn spouse! Don’t get so caught up in the goodness of the cootie that you can’t see the herpes for the trees!! Don’t become so mesmerized by the tight swang, the dope dick as some would call it, that you don’t care to see that he’s not strappin and wrappin it up!! Cuz you know where that leaves you? On Maury screamin at him that you are 100% positive he IS the father!! SAVE SOME FOR YOURSELF PEOPLE!! TAKE CARE OF YOU!! Cuz in the end, that’s really all you got…
When you look at a guy like Curtis Martin, what do you see? Because what I see is a slightly older, less wise version of Tiki Barber. Everybody was pissed that Tiki took the “easy” way out and retired “early.” If you ask me, Tiki has some damn common sense!! The beatings these players take are unbelievable!! Seldom does an RB go down without the “help” of the defense. In October of 2006, on his Sirius Satellite Radio Show, “The Barber Shop,” Tiki talked about the goals he had for his life. “I’m a diverse person. I have a lot of interests and I’ve never wanted to be solely defined as a football player. I wasn’t that way in high school, I wasn’t that way in college and I won’t compromise my ideals to be that way in the National Football League.” Tiki spent 10 years in the NFL, yet people were outraged when he decided to retire. ‘What?! You’re actually trying to bow out gracefully?! You don’t dream of getting carted off the field? Or suffering a catastrophic injury that’ll render you helpless for the rest of your life?! Ugh, you’re so selfish!’ Thank the lawd Tiki got out when he did! People were mad that his absence affected them, rather than being happy for someone who decided he didn't want to spend the next 5 years getting knocked around some more. I hate to put it like this, but we used and abused him for years! Then people have the nerve to get angry that the work horse is still viable but opts out of the exploitation! And I’m not saying it like Tiki, or any player for that matter, is a victim because for the most part, they’re willing participants and get paid damn good money to do so. And let’s face it, you can’t be an NFL running back forever. There’s a limit to the pounding and beating a body can take. Most of these guys have played football all their lives; Pop Warner, high school, college and then the pros!! That’s a lifetime of hard hits and if you’re fortunate, healable injuries. And walking off before you get carted off doesn’t sound like a sucka move to me!
I said all that to say, Curtis Martin is a future hall of famer who, if he had stopped playing when he injured his knee initially, could possibly be getting ready for training camp at Hofstra University on Friday. I understand wanting to be there for your team and organization, and the “Coach, I’m fine, put me in” mentality, but there are times when that sentiment can get you knee-deep (oooh, bad timing) in trouble.

Safety First!
Fantasy football fan? Well who are your defenses? Do you have a list of top safeties? Well, if you don't have Troy Polamalu on yours, here’s something that’ll make you think twice about what you got goin there. Yesterday, my favorite safety signed a four-year contact extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers worth $30.19 million!! That makes him the highest paid player in Steelers history, and also the highest paid safety in the NFL. At 5’10”, 207 pounds, Polamalu is regarded as one of the top defensive players in the league. The long haired Samoan, nicknamed the Tasmanian Devil, is one of the most unique and multitalented players in the NFL.
The Steelers chose USC’s Polamalu in the first round, 16th overall, in the 2003 NFL Draft. He was already scheduled to make $2.81 million in 2007. $1,088,000 of that is his actual salary, and the rest, a whopping $1,722,000, in guaranteed bonuses. This extension goes into effect next season, which means that from 2008-2011, Pittsburgh will pay him $15,375,000 in guaranteed money and roster bonuses. That’s right baby, $15 MILLION!! Polamalu will be in black and gold until he turns 30 in 2011. His age and talent level leave room for him to negotiate another explosive deal before his NFL career ends.
Polamalu is one of the most versatile and extraordinary safeties in the league. He’s speedy and sneaky on the field, and you never know where he’ll be. He’s instinctive and anticipatory; 2 characteristics that make him a killer safety. There’s rarely a defensive play on the field that he isn’t a part of. Whether it’s the interception, the bat down, or the sheer presence of the Flyin Hawaiian, you can always count on Troy to make major stops. He garners respect; he’s made the Pro Bowl the past 3 seasons! He was 2nd team All-Pro in 2004, and made 1st team All-Pro in 2005 when the Steelers won the Super Bowl.
Let me also say his timing couldn’t be any more perfect. The Steelers are in prime financial position to offer the face of their defense as much as they can to keep him. The Steelers released linebacker Joey Porter (He signed a 5-yr, $32 mil deal w/ Miami Dolphins a week later so don’t feel too bad) this off-season in lieu of paying him a $1 million roster bonus. Running back Verron Haynes was released along with Porter, and this double move saved the Steelers more than $6 million in cap room. All-Pro guard Alan Faneca was looking to restructure his own contract with the Steelers, but those talks fell through. Faneca says 2007 will be his final season in Pittsburgh. He is set to make $4.375 million this season, and will be a free agent in 2008. Let’s also keep in mind that Bill Cowher is no longer on the payroll. All these moves make for mo’ money, mo’ money, mo’ money for Troy!!
Another thing I love about him is his demeanor. While I love the personalities of a T.O. and a Chad Johnson, it’s wonderful to see a humble man playing a sport that he loves. He’s very religious, he’s married and loves his wife, and he spends his time with his family. You and I BOTH will be damned if I EVER see him chillin wit Pacman Jones shootin up the club and makin it rain on some strippers! He’s a quiet, Christian man who respects himself and his family, and sees every opportunity to make a play as a blessing. He works hard on the field, and his coaches, teammates and opponents can attest to that. But he also understands that football is not his life, but is part of his life. He deserves all the best.
Now that new head coach Mike Tomlin has some of the bigger money issues out of the way, he can focus all of his attention on a certain QB who had way too many issues last season. Yeah, that would be Ben Roethlisberger. In his 2nd year he became the youngest player in NFL history to win the Super Bowl. The Steelers finished the 2005-2006 season with a 15-1 record. Last season Roethlisberger led the NFL with 23 interceptions, and finished up ’06 at 8-8. With all the things he went through last season, including the motorcycle accident and multiple concussions, the numbers are more than understandable. I’m a Steelers fan so I definitely want to see them do better. The AFC North is looking rough so we’ll see how they fare against teams like Baltimore and Cincinnati. I see them making it to the playoffs this season. Yeah I said it, and what!?!
By the by - Wide receiver Hines Ward was Pittsburgh’s highest paid player prior to Polamalu’s blockbuster deal. In 2005, Ward signed a four-year contract extension with a maximum value of $25.8 million and guarantees him $10 million.

Durant Just Did It
Being a top pick in the NBA Draft does have its’ perks! Just ask recently minted Kevin Durant, who inked a seven-year, $60 million endorsement deal with Nike on July 17th. This contract includes a $10 million signing bonus, making this the second largest rookie deal in NBA history.
After going back and forth between Nike and adidas for two months, Durant finally made up his mind. Insiders say that the adidas deal was even bigger than the Nike! Adidas offered up a seven-year, $70 million contract that included a $12 million signing bonus, and Durant turned it down. See folks, it ain’t always about the money!! Durant was in talks with both since May, but finally decided to stick with Nike, a brand he has been affiliated with since the 8th grade. Durant’s been in cahoots with Nike execs since junior high. Talk about a throw BACK! Nike VP and GM of Global Basketball Craig Zanon had this to say of the pricey deal. “We are very pleased to have Kevin as a part of the Nike Basketball family…Kevin is an amazing talent on the court and a quality person off the court and we are happy to be partnering with him as he starts his NBA career.” Yeah, that is until they find out he’s mating bunnies then entering their offspring in pit bull fights! Then they’ll abandon his ass quicker than they did Michael Vick!
Included in this deal is a signature shoe that will launch after his rookie year. Durant’s also taking a page from Stephon Marbury’s book entitled "Cheap Ass," and is looking to back a "mid-price" shoe. We’ll see how that plays out…
Since Durant’s deal is second, you may be wondering whose is #1. None other than the King himself – Lebron James! He signed his seven-year, $90 million contract after being the 1st pick in the 2003 draft. Looking for another link? Durant’s agent, Aaron Goodwin, brokered this deal. Goodwin is also is James’ former agent, and was part of the team that put together his multi-million dollar Nike deal. SWOOSH!! That's the sound the money makes when it goes in the bag...
